Tennis Eliminated at State Championships
Erin McLaughin and Kaitlyn Broderick each win first-round singles matches Tournament Webpage October 18, 2008
 Erin McLaughlin wins her first round singles match at the NYS Championships Junior Erin McLaughlin (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and freshman Kaitlyn Broderick (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) each won first-round singles matches for The College at Brockport Tennis team Friday at the New York State Championship Tournament at Ithaca College. Each of the four remaining players at the tournament were eliminated in singles play Saturday.
McLaughlin won a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Lauren Jones from St. John Fisher College to advance to the quarterfinals at No. 3 singles, while Broderick came from behind after dropping the first set, 6-4, to win the second and third sets by scores of 7-5 and 6-3 over Samantha Griffin from Union College.
Brockport’s top two singles players, No. 1 Lindsay Willeford (Fairport, NY/Denison (TX)) and Kristen Hemingway (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) each received first-round byes in the tournament.
Willeford was scratched from her spot at No. 1 singles while Hemingway was stopped by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 score in her quarterfinal match. McLaughlin lost a 6-0, 6-1 decision and Broderick dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match at No. 6 singles.
Brockport’s Ally Kozlowski (Alden, NY/Alden) and Katie Keller (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) each lost in the first round of singles play. Both players lost in three sets with Kozlowski dropping her first set in a tie-breaker before winning the second set, 7-5, but lost a 6-2 decision in the third set. Keller won her first set 6-4 but dropped the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
