Senior middle hitter Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown) tallied a team-high 11 kills and three blocks Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as The College at Brockport Volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Red Dragons from Cortland. The Golden Eagles (5-6) were defeated by scores of 25-18, 15-25, 25-17, and 25-21.

Junior Kristi Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) totaled six kills and senior Amanda Yachetta (Falconer, NY/Falconer) dished out 21 assists and added nine digs. Melissa Maxwell (Batavia, NY/Batavia) collected 17 digs.

Brockport led 17-13 in the first set before Cortland rallied behind the serving of Ariel Rakita to tally nine consecutive points as part of a 13-1 run to end the game at 25-18.

In game two, Brockport led by four points at 13-9 and won 11 of the next 12 points for a 24-10 advantage. Cortland strung together the next five points before Brockport ended the set on a block by Fitchette.

Cortland took an early 8-2 lead in the third game forcing Brockport to call a timeout. The Golden Eagles pulled to within three points at 11-8 but the Red Dragons scored six of the next seven points and never looked back en route to the 25-17 final.

In the final stanza, the game was tied at 3-3 before Cortland tallied a kill and took the lead for good. Brockport trailed by just two at 14-12, however the Red Dragons registered the next five points for a seven-point advantage. The Golden Eagles pulled to within three points at 23-20 but it wasn’t enough.

The Golden Eagles return to the court this weekend at the RIT Invitational when they face Nazareth and Clarkson on Friday, September 18.
