The Golden Eagles defeated Buffalo State 3-2 (25-16, 28-26, 26-28, 23-25, 15-11) in the morning and came from behind to earn a 3-1 victory over defending West Division champs Fredonia (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 26-24).
In the win over Buffalo State, Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown) led the Golden Eagles with 23 kills and Kelly Nowak (Orchard Park, NY/Sacred Heart) finished with 13 kills. Heather Carroll (Windsor, NY/Windsor) added 10 kills on offense and Alex Stribing (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) served eight aces. Amanda Yachetta (Falconer, NY/Falconer) set a new career high of 48 assists – breaking her previous mark of 44 set earlier this season.
Brockport took an early 7-0 lead in the first game, including four aces by Stribing. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 14-4 and never looked back as they dominated the first set. Game two was a back-and-forth battle with the score tied 14 different times. The last deadlock came at 26-26 before Fitchette tallied a kill and Buffalo State registered an error. The third set was similar to the second as the score was tied, 26-26, except Buffalo State prevailed with a kill and an ace to stay alive. Brockport led 16-9 in the fourth game but the Bengals rallied to tie the game at 23-23 and tallied a kill and took advantage of a Golden Eagle kill to force a fifth game. Brockport never trailed in the final set and led 7-3. Buffalo State came within one point at 10-9 before the Golden Eagles scored three straight points and finally ended the match on a kill by Fitchette.
Fitchette paced the offense against Fredonia with a career-high 26 kills and four blocks. The 26 kills is the most by a Brockport player since the 2002 season. Carroll finished with nine kills and three aces and Yachetta handed out 45 assists. Melissa Maxwell (Batavia, NY/Batavia) and Aubrey Smith (Bath, NY/Hammondsport) combined for 25 digs.
All four games against Fredonia were tightly-contested battles which came down to the final few points. In game one, neither team led by more than three points as the Blue Devils earned the win on a kill and a Brockport error for the final two points. Brockport led 23-21 in the second set before an attacking error and a net violation evened the score at 23-23. The Golden Eagles pulled together for two straight points to even the match at a game apiece. In the third set, Brockport was trailing 19-21 and scored six of the next seven points, including three service aces by Stribing. The Golden Eagles led by as many as six points in the final set at 16-10 before Fredonia rallied to even the score at 19-19. It was a back-and-forth game with the Blue Devils taking a 24-23 lead and a chance to win the set. Fredonia gave Brockport a point on a service error to even the score and the Golden Eagles took advantage, tallying a block and a final kill to win the match.
Brockport improves to 10-10 on the season and will return to action next weekend at the Nazareth Invitational.
