Head Coach: Michele Carron
Michele Carron took over as head coach of The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team in 1992 and has transformed the program into one of the most respected in New York State and the Region. She has led the Golden Eagles to more than 250 victories and led the team to its fourth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship and its fourth trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2008.
Carron has produced a winning record in 14 of her 16 seasons as head coach and put together winning teams in each of her first eight seasons. Her overall career record after the 2007-08 season stands at 261-167 (.610 winning percentage).
A 1986 Brockport graduate, Carron has a master's degree from The Ohio State University (1989). She was an assistant coach at Ohio State for one season before returning to her alma mater in the fall of 1990. She was an assistant under former coach Judy Jensen for two seasons prior to taking the reins as head coach.
In Carron's first season, 1992-93, the Golden Eagles posted a 14-11 record, at the time, third-best in school history. Surprisingly, it followed a 5-17 campaign in which Carron virtually had the same cast to work with. For her efforts, she was selected as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year by her peers after the season. She became the first coach in the history of SUNYAC to be honored in two sports in the same year, earning the softball award later that spring.
In 1993, Carron relinquished her softball duties and focused her efforts onto basketball. The 1993-94 team posted a 14-12 regular-season record, followed by the school's first non-SUNYAC, non-state playoff berth since the late '70s, as Brockport was chosen to play in the ECAC Upstate New York tournament to cap a year filled with record-setting accomplishments.
The 1994-95 campaign saw the Golden Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
Carron also returned to the softball diamond at the end of the 1995-96 season and led the Golden Eagles to a 21-9 record, a 12th straight SUNYAC West title, and the NYSWCAA Championship. In 1996-97, Carron turned in another masterful coaching job, leading basketball team to a school-record 13 conference wins and a 16-9 overall record. She was honored as the conference coach of the year for the second time in five seasons and coached the first SUNYAC MVP in school history as Kristin Roseti walked away with that honor.
The 1998-99 season was filled with milestones for Carron, who recorded her 100th career victory at Brockport late in her seventh season at the helm. That year, the Golden Eagles posted a 15-12 record, reaching the semifinals of the SUNYAC championships and making an appearance in the ECAC Tournament. Standout junior All-American Jen Feneli led the way for the Golden Eagles, breaking or tying 16 school records, and leading the nation in blocked shots.
In 1999-2000, Brockport tied the school record for wins in a season with 18, which was first accomplished during the 1980-81 season. The ‘90s, under Carron's leadership, was the most successful decade in Brockport history (141-111 record). Feneli emerged as the best basketball player ever to graduate from Brockport, collecting 24 school records, including marks for career points (1,938) and rebounds (977), and also became the SUNYAC career scoring leader. She was named SUNYAC Player of the Year, ECAC Player of the Year, NYSWCAA Player of the Year, and was named to several All-American teams.
In 2001-02 and 2002-03, Carron boasted the best player in the SUNYAC for two straight seasons as Kristen Clark earning Player of the Year honors both seasons. She was also the SUNYAC Tournament MVP and d3hoops.com All-Region accolades to name a few. In addition to several players' honors, the team made its second NCAA tournament appearance in 2002-03.
The 2004-05 team rebounded from just the second sub-.500 season in Carron's tenure with an 18-10 overall record and a second SUNYAC Title. The team also made its third trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament and hosted its first ever tournament game.
The 2005-06 team advanced to the postseason as the team advanced to the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament and earned a trip to the ECAC Tournament as well. Led by D3Hoops.com All-Region selection, Ashley Broadhurst, the Golden Eagles posted a 14-13 record.
Broadhurst cleared the 1,000-career point milestone in 2006-07 leading the team to the ECAC Tournament once again as the team advanced to the championship game of the tournament before dropping a close game to William Smith.
The 2007-08 season was a record-breaking one for the green and gold. The team posted a school record for wins in a season (25), fewest loses in a season (5), points in a season (2,065), free throw percentage (.757), and three-point percentage (.363). Carron also guided Brockport to its first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.
Broadhurst finished her four-year career at Brockport as the ECAC Upstate NY Player of the Year and a D3hoops.com All-East Region Team as a first-team selection. She was also a finalist for the WHAM Sportswoman of the Year award and was voted the Brockport Outstanding Athlete of The Year, The Sauquoit native, left her mark as the College’s all-time leader in assists, three-point shooting, games played and started, and numerous single season records. She is third in scoring (1,697 points), second in steals (191), and in the top ten in career rebounding (470).
