Women’s Basketball Wins Behind Strong First Half
Whitney Smith leads the Golden Eagles with a career-high 24 points February 7, 2009 Junior Whitney Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) hit 6-of-7 three-point shots and scored a career-high 24 points to lead The College at Brockport Women’s Basketball team to a 72-56 victory over SUNY Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Saturday night at the Tuttle North Gymnasium in Brockport.
Smith connected on 5-of-6 jumpers from long range in the first half as Brockport (12-8 overall, 7-4 SUNYAC) built a 15-point lead by halftime and led 39-24 going into the locker room.
In the second half, Brockport maintained its lead and only allowed Oswego (9-12, 7-5) to get within 11 points with five minutes to play. Brockport used a 9-0 run to regain the 20-point advantage and cruised to the victory. The win is the fourth straight for the Golden Eagles and sixth in the last eight games since returning to SUNYAC play after the JP Morgan/Chase Tournament in January.
Smith led the way with her 24 points and also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds. Senior Brenlyn Campbell (Williamsville, NY/Lewiston-Porter) added 21 points while Molly Brewer (Lockport, NY/Lockport) added six points and eight rebounds and Jen Buskus (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored six points and handed out eight assists.
