Women’s Basketball to Play for SUNYAC Championship
Whitney Smith scores 18 points to lead Brockport February 27, 2009
Brockport advances to SUNYAC Title game(credit: Michael Pratt, MLPhoto) Junior Whitney Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored 18 points, including a free throw with three seconds remaining in the game, to seal a 56-54 victory for the College at Brockport Women’s Basketball team over SUNY Oneonta Friday night in a semifinal game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament in Cortland. The Golden Eagles will play SUNY Potsdam in the title game at 4 pm Saturday after the Bears upset top-seeded SUNY Cortland in the other semifinal game.
Brockport (18-9) held a 33-26 lead at halftime but let Oneonta (20-6) back into the game and the teams traded the lead several times in the second half. With five minutes to play, Oneonta held its biggest lead of the half at 52-47 before Brockport scored nine straight points to regain the advantage. Senior Brenlyn Campbell (Williamsville, NY/Lewiston-Porter) dropped in three baskets in the run, which was capped by a pair of free throws by Jen Buskus (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).
An Oneonta jumper cut the Brockport lead to a point at 55-54 but Smith’s free throw with three seconds remaining put the finishing touch on the victory.
Smith led Brockport with 18 points, including three three-pointers, and Campbell finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Buskus added 11 points and six assists. Her assist total ties her with Ashley Broadhurst’s 150 for second place on the all-time Brockport list for assists in a season.
Kiomi Matthews (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) added nine points and three steals for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport's opponent, SUNY Potsdam, pulled off a huge upset in the second game of the night, knocking off top-seeded and host Cortland. The Golden Eagles split the two regular-season meetings between the teams, with Potsdam posting a double-digit victory at home in December and Brockport winning in overtime on its home court last month.
With a victory on Saturday night, the Brockport women will claim their third SUNYAC title in the past five years.
