Head Coach: Joan Schockow
When you think of women’s soccer at The College at Brockport, you think of head coach Joan Schockow. The all-time winningest soccer coach in Brockport history (male or female) has established herself as one of the best and most dedicated coaches in the region.
Schockow started her head coaching career for Brockport in 1988 and has guided the Golden Eagles to postseason play 14 times including each of the last 12 consecutive seasons. In 2008, the Golden Eagles advanced to the championship game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament and tied SUNY Oneonta. Brockport returned to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Tournament earned the top seed and won a 1-0 championship game victory over RIT. Four Brockport players earned All-SUNYAC honors with Nicole Gibaud and Jessica VanAllen earning First-Team honors.
The veteran head coach was voted the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career and second time in the last three seasons in 2008. She also won the award in 2006, 1993 and 1989.
In 2007, the Golden Eagles advanced to the championship game of the ECAC Upstate NY Tournament and in 2006, Schockow led the Golden Eagles to its first NCAA Tournament with an automatic bid by virtue of a SUNYAC Tournament Championship.
With a 4-3 victory over St. John Fisher in 2007, Schockow won her 200th career game. Her career record at Brockport stands at 223-135-29 overall (.609 winning percentage). The 2007 squad set the single season record for wins with a 17-4-1. The team placed five members on All-SUNYAC teams.
The veteran head coach took over the Brockport Women’s Soccer program from Connie Wehner in 1988 after the team had suffered through two straight losing seasons. Three years later, Schockow had the team back on track with a 9-8-1 winning record in 1992. The team has not been below .500 since.
She is the third head coach in the varsity history of the program after Gene Orbacher established the varsity team in 1983 and guided the squad through the first three seasons.
During her career at Brockport, she has coached 76 players to All-SUNYAC selections, 38 players to All-State honors and has had seven of her athletes named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-Region team for the Northeast Region.
Meghan Quinlan and Nicole Gibaud each earned the honor following the 2007 season. Molly Berkstresser was an All-Region selection in 2006. Emily Seymour and Mary Maslanka were honored in 2001 and the following year Courtney Eddinger and Leanne Gedraitis were also selected to the All-Northeast squad.
Her teams have had 12 double-digit winning seasons and since 1997, the Golden Eagles have averaged double figures in wins since Schockow started in 1988 with 223 wins in the last 21 seasons including a school-record tying 17 victories in 2007. The Golden Eagles in that time period have gone to 10 ECAC tournaments, seven SUNYAC Tournaments, two NYSWCAA Tournaments including a runner-up finish to close out the 2005 season and the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
Under Schockow’s watch Leanne Gedraitis became the leading scorer in women’s soccer with 132 points and eight of the All-Time top 10 scorers in school history have played for Schockow.
A former All-American goal keeper at SUNY Cortland, Schockow has also mentored seven of the top-10 goalies in school history. Overall, all but one individual school record was set during her tenure.
A 1-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam near the end of the 1998 season was her 100th career victory. She tied former men’s head coach A. Huntley Parker Jr.’s career win total of 161 with a 1-0 victory over SUNY Cortland in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament in 2003 and became the winningest soccer coach in Brockport history with the team’s first win in 2004 - a 2-0 win over Keuka College to start the season.
In 1995, she guided the Golden Eagles to their best season in school history at the time with a school record 16 victories and a 16-4-2 record. The 2006 squad equaled the 16-win total and finished with a 16-3-1 record.
Before coming to Brockport, Schockow was an assistant soccer coach at her alma mater, SUNY Cortland. The 2008 C-Club Hall of Fame inductee established herself as the premier goalie in the nation, earning first-team All-American status in each of her four years while leading her team to the national title in 1980 with a victory over UCLA in the AIAW championship. She was recognized in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in 1984 for her accomplishments. She previously coached the under-14 Olympic Development Team, and has been the head coach for New York West Olympic Development Program.
Schockow also coached U.S.A. Olympian Abby Wambach during the national star’s youth soccer days in the Rochester area.
