Huntley Parker Jr. Field as part of the 2009 Golden Challenge for a Pink Cure, sponsored by The Soccer Shack.
This is the first time the two teams have come together in the fight against breast cancer and it will continue to be an annual event between the Golden Eagles and the Golden Flyers. All proceeds will be donated to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Division of the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
After a scoreless first half, Nazareth’s Erica Conte (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) netted an unassisted goal at 45:39 to the low right corner, giving the Golden Flyers the 1-0 lead.
Brockport (3-1-1) outshot Nazareth (1-2-1) 11-6 in the second half but was unable to convert until the final two minutes. Senior Natalie Gregorski (Williamsville, NY/ Williamsville South) blasted a shot from the top of the box that deflected off the crossbar to the foot of VanAllen to tie the game.
Each team managed two shots in overtime as Brockport held a 20-16 advantage on the day.
The Golden Eagles had a few chances throughout the game that had the fans on the edge of their seat, including a shot by VanAllen in the 78th minute when she received a pass from Gregorski up the middle and her shot missed inches wide to the left. In the 73rd minute, freshman Taylor Lanio (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) blasted a shot point blank off a corner kick that Nazareth keeper Hillary Simon managed to save.
Brockport’s Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) posted nine saves as Simon made eight for the Golden Flyers. This is the third time in the all-time series the two teams have tied as Nazareth leads overall, 14-12-3.
Brockport will return to action next Saturday, September 19th when the Golden Eagles host SUNY Geneseo at 1 p.m. in the first SUNYAC conference game of the season.
