Golden Challenge for a Pink Cure Deemed a Success
Over $2,300 raised for Breast Cancer Research September 15, 2009
On September 12, The College at Brockport women’s soccer team partnered up with the Nazareth College soccer team for the first annual "Golden Challenge for a Pink Cure," sponsored by The Soccer Shack.
The event promoted breast cancer awareness and raised money for cancer research. This will continue to be an annual event with proceeds going to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Division of the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
The Golden Eagles and Golden Flyers wore pink and black Nike uniforms provided by The Soccer Shack, and specially designed pink t-shirts were sold throughout the game. Fans proudly wore pink to show their support and generously made donations. Spectators were also given an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets at their chance to toss a Pink Cure Pie in the face of one of their favorite athletic staff members during halftime.
Prior to the game, Megan MacKenzie, a former soccer player at the University of Rochester who is currently battling breast cancer, took part in a ceremonial start. She was joined by her long-time friends, head coaches Joan Schockow of Brockport and Gail Mann of Nazareth and Megan Hanushek from The Soccer Shack. The four played soccer together on multiple club teams and years later they have joined forces to take an active role in breast cancer awareness.
With a tremendous turnout, this event was perceived to be a success by all in attendance, and $2,326.31 was raised for the Wilmont Cancer Center. Thank you to everyone for their support during the event and for helping to raise awareness about breast cancer.
