Eric VanPatten Wrestles to a Third-Place Finish in Ashland

Senior Eric VanPatten (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) lost a decision in his first bout but rebounded to win six consecutive matches in the consolation bracket to earn a third-place finish for The College at Brockport Wrestling team at the Harris Auto Center Open Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.

In all, three Golden Eagles placed at the tournament with Josh Bloom (Manchester, NY/Geneva) and Jabril Patterson (Syracuse, NY/Adirondack) each earning fifth-place finishes.

VanPatten earned decisions over wrestlers from Gannon, Heidelberg, Ohio State, West Liberty and Findlay before defeating Ohio State’s T.C. Pendleton in the consolation final for third place at 174 pounds.

Bloom also lost his first bout at 184 pounds and dropped into the consolation bracket, where he won five times and lost once to finish fifth. He defeated wrestlers from Notre Dame, Mercy Northeastern, Eastern Michigan and Heidelberg before defeating Ohio State’s David Crowley for fifth place.

Patterson also dropped his first match in the championship bracket but was successful in the consolation rounds with victories over wrestlers from Ohio Northern, Gannon, Heidelberg before downing West Liberty’s Mike Carpenter for fifth place.
