Conn, a resident of Batavia, NY, along with her mother Denise, met a group of runners who were in the midst of completing Sophie’s Run, a fundraising and awareness raising run for colorectal cancer, at her local gym. Denise has colon cancer so the two were very interested in talking with the group of runners and Conn, a cross country and track & field athlete at The College at Brockport was of interest to the group. The group invited Kelsey to join them in their journey and she accepted the offer to run a leg of the charitable run. On Tuesday, September 16, Conn ran 16km (10 miles) of Sophie’s Run starting in Caledonia and ending her hometown of Batavia.
Sophie’s Run, a charitable run to raise awareness of colorectal cancer, started in memory of Sophie Chuchmach who lost her battle with rectal cancer on September 15, 2006. Colorectal cancer is the third-most common diagnosed cancer. Sophie’s daughter Nicole has helped organize the run from her hometown of Milton, Ontario, to New York City. The run started in early September and passed through the Batavia area earlier this week.
Conn was recently been named Female SUNYAC Cross Country Runner of the Week after finished 1st in the Brockport Invitational on September 13 with a time of 19:48.60. It was her first season running cross-country for the Golden Eagles and her first race of the season. The sophomore Communications major is also a key member of the Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field squads at Brockport and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and finished ninth in the 10,000 meter run.
