BUS389 Career Planning Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND RELATED INFORMATION

A job or internship search is often an overwhelming process. This coarse helps participants learn the skills used in an effective search (i.e. how to locate opportunities, write resumes, etc.). All projects are experiential in nature, allowing for direct application of all skills learned in class. By the end of the course, participants will have applied to at least 20 organizations! The skills and strategies acquired during the semester will allow you to manage your career over a lifetime.

The primary goal of the course is to improve self-confidence and self-awareness through specific hands-on activities. Detailed course objectives and outcomes are listed below.

Course Objectives & Key Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand how values, interests, abilities, and transferable skills affect one's ability to be successful in the marketplace.
  2. Develop awareness and understanding of the importance of goal-setting in a job or internship search.
  3. Learn to conduct career/profession, industry, and field research.
  4. Prepare and disseminate targeted resumes, cover letters, and other forms of job search documentation to prospective employers.
  5. Implement strategic approaches, both reactive and proactive, to career planning and job searches.
  6. Identify and apply to appropriate internship/job opportunities. Learn to effectively interview for professional positions.
  7. Understand and appreciate effective networking and its purpose in a job/internship or graduate school search.
  8. Understand expectations of professional staff in a business environment including etiquette and proper dress.
  9. Create a competitive application for graduate school, including funding strategies.
  10. Utilize enhanced presentation, business writing, and teamwork skills.
