SUNY Brockport: Expect the Extraordinary!
Academics

John J. Spitzer, Ph.D.

Emeritus Professor of Economics

John J. Spitzer joined the faculty of SUNY Brockport in 1971. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.S. from Syracuse University.  He retired from active duty in January 2008.

Professor Spitzer taught courses in microeconomics, statistics, and econometrics.  His research interests include Box-Cox transformations, Monte Carlo methods, nonlinear parameter estimation, and, more recently, optimal retirement strategies.

His research has been published in The Journal of the American Statistical Association, The Journal of Econometrics, International Economic Review, The Review of Economics and Statistics, and numerous other journals. He was the 2005 recipient of the SUNY Research Foundation "Research Recognition Award," and was the 2006 recipient of the "Chancellors Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities." He is an acknowledged expert in the area of Box-Cox transformations and his econometric work is internationally cited, not only in economics, but also in geology, agriculture, dairy farming, banking, urban development, fishery industries, biology, and medicine. The diversity of disciplines (and countries) suggests that his statistical findings have utility in a broad range of professions and are of interest both nationally and internationally. Many of Dr. Spitzer's research conclusions are regularly referred to in econometrics textbooks.

Almost 15 years ago, his research interests took a turn away from econometric theory and toward his looming retirement.  He has authored and/or co-authored numerous journal articles in recent years on the topic of asset allocation, asset location, withdrawal strategies, and tax-efficient withdrawals during retirement. He is still engaged in active research in retirement issues.

In his spare time, Professor Spitzer enjoys fishing and playing bridge.
