Admission Criteria

Criteria and procedures for application will require submission or evidence of the following:

Students will be required to submit a standard graduate application form to the Graduate Studies Office along with evidence of the following:

  1. Baccalaureate degree with at least 120 hours and the following required content:

    1. Accounting Coursework* Minimum Credit Hours
    Principles 6 hours
    Intermediate 6 hours
    Cost or Managerial 3 hours
    Federal Income Tax 3 hours
    Auditing 3 hours
    Additional Accounting Course 3 hours
      * Minimum grade of "C" is required for all undergraduate accounting courses completed
    2. Business Coursework (Minimum of 18 hours)*  
    Management Information Systems (or AIS) 3 hours
    Principles of Finance 3 hours
    Principles of Management or Organizational Behavior 3 hours
    Principles of Marketing 3 hours
    Basic Statistics 3 hours
    Business Law I or Legal Environment of Business 3 hours
    Additional Business Courses 6 hours
      * Minimum grade of "C-" is required for all undergraduate business courses completed
    3. Other required undergraduate business-related content*   
    Principles of Micro and Macro Economics    6 hours
    Calculus 3 hours
    Business writing or business communications 1-3 hours
    Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel and Access.  
       * Minium grade of "C-" for required business-related content courses  

     

  2. 3.0 or higher overall undergraduate grade point average.
  3. GMAT or GRE - Waived if: 1) overall undergraduate GPA is 3.25 or higher; 2) if transferring from another graduate accounting or business program with a minimum of "B" in all work completed at the graduate level; 3) if professional accountant with accounting certification (e.g. CPA, CMA, CIA, CFE).

     d.     In addition, students will be  required to submit the following documents:

  1. Personal statement expressing reasons for application, and interest in accounting as an academic discipline and in accounting practice.
  2. Resume
  3. Two letters of recommendation from those who can assess applicant's potential for success.

Criteria for admission will be evaluated within the context of the applicant demonstrating appropriate interest and likelihood of success in completing the degree. Prior work experience will also be considered. 

CPA Licensure Requirements

Prior formal education at the Bachelor or Master Degree level combined with requirements of the Master of Science Degree must meet New York State Education Department requirements to sit for the Uniform CPA examination as follows: a combined minimum of 33 hours in accounting, a combined minimum of 36 hours in business subjects other than accounting, and a combined minimum of 60 hours of liberal arts and sciences. Transfer Credit

Graduate transfer credit of nine hours toward the degree is allowed for courses taken at regionally accredited institutions with a grade of "B" or better. All accounting courses (ACC) must be taken at Brockport.

Non-Matriculated Study

Non-matriculated students may take up to nine hours of credit if they meet the prerequisite requirements for courses selected. Students must apply as non-degree students with the Graduate Studies Office.
