Department is Host to Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession Program

On June 28, 2004, the Rochester chapter of the New York State Society of CPA's (NYSSCPA) launched its first annual Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP) program. The program, one of seven conducted by various NYSSCPA chapters around the state, is aimed at cultivating an interest in the accounting profession among minority high school students. The majority of the four-day program took place at SUNY Brockport, which allowed the students to experience some aspects of college life.

The sixteen students who participated got a taste of what it would be like to pursue a career in accounting. The program included sessions on accounting subjects and practical life-skill sessions on subjects such as financial planning, résumé writing, interviewing skills, and diversity in the work force. The students also got to see inside a local CPA firm and spent the day with professionals at Eldredge, Fox, and Poretti, LLP. There they got hands on experience preparing their own mock tax return on a computerized tax system, and practice interview sessions.
