Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
Student Chapter #5321

SHRM logo

Welcome and thank you for visiting the SUNY Brockport SHRM web site. SUNY Brockport has an active SHRM student chapter, holding regular meetings and hosting professionals from the local HR community for speaking engagements. Our organization is affiliated with the Genesee Valley chapter of SHRM, which has given students the opportunity to network with HR professionals and attend the monthly meetings of the Genesee Valley Chapter for a nominal fee.

What is SHRM?

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) helps undergraduate and graduate students make the transition from the classroom to the business world. SHRM, a national human resource society, enables student members to gain access to an international network of business professionals, make human resources (HR) contacts who can help facilitate the job search, be exposed to the latest news, information and important developments in HR management, and enhance employment marketability.

Students are eligible to become members of SHRM if they are taking six credit hours in a degree-seeking program and have a demonstrated interest in the HR field. National SHRM student members receive subscriptions to HR Magazine, HR News, and Echoes, access to the online member directory, free bibliographies on selected HR topics, and a special rate for their first year of professional membership after graduation. Qualified members may also apply for one of two $2500 undergraduate and $5000 graduate scholarships.

Benefits of SHRM :

The benefits and services provided by SHRM are an invaluable asset to your education and career. There are many reasons to join SHRM:

  • HR Magazine: the leading publication for human resource professionals. Its in-depth articles present new ideas, practices, and solutions to specific problem areas.
  • HR News: reports on HR management issues. Sections like Legal Report and Washington Scoreboard analyze how court decisions and legislation will affect HR professionals. Classified ad pages offer numerous job opportunities.
  • Networking: SHRM allows you to meet other students and professionals in the field. The Genesee Valley Chapter's monthly meetings feature guest speakers discussing legal issues, compensation practices, presentation skills and more.

Benefits of SHRM student chapter membership:

  • Chapter projects and activities related to the Human Resources field will prepare you to enter the profession.
  • Contact with the "real world" of Human Resources through participation with the local professional chapter.
  • Information about the latest HR news and trends through presentations from Human
  • Resource professionals.
  • Networking with business leaders of today, as well as those of tomorrow.
  • Who's Who in HR: A directory of SHRM's professional members, along with contact names and phone numbers of professional and student chapters.
  • Invitation for all student members to submit a resume in the SHRM Annual Resume Book. (These books are made available to those professional members attending the National SHRM Conference.)
