Awards & Scholarships
The Department is proud to offer our students awards and scholarships that are exclusively granted to Accounting, Business Administration, and International Business Majors. These scholarships and awards are educational expense grants; they are not related to aid programs. In other words, the monetary amount is deducted directly from your tuition bill. Below is a brief description of the current departmental awards.
The Advantage Professionals Scholarship was established by Mr. Mark G. Pautler, president of Advantage Professionals, in recognition of the strong relationship between his company and SUNY Brockport. This scholarship provides financial assistance to an accounting major who exhibits excellence in the classroom and high potential for success as an accounting professional.
The Allen V. Upton Award honors the memory of a 1979 graduate of the business administration and economics program who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This award, established by Mr. Upton's family and friends, is intended to help a student gain the SUNY Brockport education that was so important to Mr. Upton.
The Barbara E. Kowalczyk Memorial Award in Economics was established to honor the memory of Ms. Kowalczyk, the late wife of David Kowalczyk, one of the Department's Economics professors. It is an annual award for a student in the Department of Business Administration and Economics who exhibits excellence in the classroom, and has a strong history of community and extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to those with a strong economics background.
The Charles J. Ashworth Memorial Scholarship in Business and Economics recognizes outstanding departmental majors who strive for excellence and high personal standards in academic, social, and professional environments. It is given by Mrs. Ashworth in memory of her husband, a local and national businessman.
The Louis R. Desfosses, Sr. Scholarship in International Business was established to recognize an outstanding student in the SUNY Brockport International Business program who has demonstrated commitment to and potential for excellence in a career in international business. Dr. Desfosses served on the faculty in the department of business administration and economics from 1979 to 2000.
The Raymond C. Shaheen Award in Business was founded by Mr. Shaheen, a member of the College Council since 1974 and a member of the Brockport College Foundation Board of Directors from 1977 to 1987. It recognizes a student showing academic excellence who has demonstrated an interest in a career in marketing.
The Rotenberg Scholarship, sponsored by Rotenberg & Co., LLP is awarded to an accounting major who has completed at least two years of college and is a participant in community or charitable service. In addition to an annual educational grant, the scholarship recipient is entitled to a paid summer internship at Rotenberg & Co., LLP.
The Schmitt Foundation Scholarship in Business is awarded to an incoming third-year student accepted in the baccalaureate program in accounting, international business and economics, or business administration who has completed an associate's degree at an accredited college.
The Shannon Adams Scholarship in Accounting was established by friends and classmates of Shannon, a former student who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. The scholarship is awarded to an accounting major who is a junior in status at the time of selection, and who demostrates commitment to and potential for excellence in the career of accounting.
Additionally the Department nominates students for scholarships sponsored by other professional organizations we have associations with such as: The New York State Society of CPA’s, The Financial Executives Institute, The International Business Council of the Rochester Business Alliance, and the Turnaround Management Association, to name a few. Recognition awards (no monetary value) given by the department include the Departmental Scholar Award in Accounting, Business Administration, and International Business. We also nominate one candidate each year for the School of Professions Award and President’s Citation Award.
There are many more awards and scholarships at the college level that department majors are eligible for. We encourage and actively support our students in pursuing college level awards as well as those administered by external entities. Some examples include the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, Alumni Association Awards, and the Outstanding Adult Student Award.
