A Quick Reference Guide to the Albany State Legislature Programs

What are the Albany State Legislature Programs?

There are two distinct programs, each of which provide a stipend and academic credit. They include:

The Assembly Intern Program runs during the spring semester only and gives graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to learn the state legislative process while being assigned to a member of the New York State Assembly. Students earn nine hours of internship credits and six seminar credits through the Department of Political Science. (Students receive letter grades for both courses.) Interns are typically placed on the basis of their interest in a particular kind of legislation or policy issue. The Albany Intern Program pays a $3,500 stipend for the spring semester. Additional information is available at http://assembly.state.ny.us:/internship/

The New York State Senate Session Assistants Program places students with Senators in state offices and on legislative committees. Open to juniors and seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA from any academic major, this highly competitive program operates in the spring semester only. Students earn nine internship credits and six seminar credits through the Department of Political Science. (Students receive letter grades for both courses.) Interns are typically placed on the basis of their interest in a particular kind of legislation or topic of research. The Senate program has a $3,500 stipend for the spring semester.

How could one of these programs help me?

Each Program offers the student an excellent opportunity to explore a career interest on a professional level in state government, while receiving a stipend and academic credit. Each student participating in an Albany program will be able to learn new or refine current transferable skills, at the same time gaining insight into the work environment of a state agency, the Assembly, or the Senate.

How do I apply?

Additional packets with additional information and instructions can be obtained at either the Career Services or the Department of Political Science.

Application requirements include submission of: faculty endorsements, transcript copies, a writing sample and a biographical statement. Requirements for submission vary slightly for each program. Refer to packet instructions and materials to confirm submission requirements.

Applications must be completed and submitted prior to scheduling an appointment with the College's liaison staff member, Robert DiCarlo, Assistant Director, Career Services. Dr.Walt Borowiec, Political Science, is responsible for awarding the final grade and is the faculty sponsor of all Albany interns.

When do I apply?

Applications for both programs are due in mid-October. You should check program materials for specific application deadline dates.

General Information

· The Assembly Intern Program and the New York State Senate Program offer other internship or fellowship possibilities for graduate students or summer experiences. Inquire at Career Services for more information on these opportunities.
· Program stipends do not affect financial aid for the year the student is participating, but the stipend must be reported as earned income for the following year. Participants in the program will be advised on financial aid status individually.
