Your job is not done with the resume and cover letter. You may need to compose letters for a number of other situations in your job search:
click on each type for more information and samples
- Showing appreciation (thank you letters)
- Accepting an employment offer
- Withdrawing your application from consideration
- Rejecting an employment offer
Each needs to be professionally written and personalized appropriately, and each needs to create a positive impression with the reader.
General tips for all job search correspondence letters
- As with all business correspondence, job search letters should be typed.
- Say what you mean clearly and simply without slang, jargon or complex vocabulary. Try reading it aloud.
- Focus on the positive. Do not mention the negative.
- Keep the letter to one page - preferably to one-half page.
- Always address the letter to one person with his or her correct title and business address.
- Tailor each letter to each situation. Generic letters at any stage, but especially at this stage, are unprofessional.
- Be timely. Your thank you letter should be sent ASAP after the interview and the acceptance/rejection of an offer letters should be sent as soon as you make your decision.
- Use high quality white or off-white resume paper and envelopes.
- Remember to sign your letters and keep copies of everything you send.
- Have someone proofread your letters before you send them.
