Internships Overview
scroll down for applicationsAt Brockport, there are many internship opportunities ranging from one credit programs to full-time, paid positions.
A good starting point would be to pay Career Services a visit. Not only does Career Services advertise hundreds of different internships through the on-line job database JobShop, but we grant credit through the Brockport Career Exploration Course, as well as through other programs. (information below) And internships often turn into full-time jobs after graduation.See a list of employers who have used Brockport interns sorted by employer, sorted by major or sorted by location.
First, decide on the time commitment you want to make. For example, if you need to take some required courses next semester, then it wouldn’t make sense to apply for a full-time internship like the Walt Disney World College Program or the Public Service Intership Program (formerly Albany Semester Program). Second, what type of internship are you looking for? Is there a particular organization or population (kids versus senior citizens) or working hours you need? Third, do you need academic credit and if you do, what type of credit (major, elective, upper division)? Giving some thought to these questions, will help you narrow down your choices and suitable programs for you.
Next, you should identify which College program is best for you. For example, if you need credit in your academic major, find out if your department offers internships. You should also find out if there are prerequisites such as GPA, prior coursework or year in school. While some academic departments offer internships, the largest program on campus is the Brockport Career Exploration Course that allows students from all academic majors to participate. For more information on the Brockport Career Exploration Course, stop by Career Services (Rakov Center) or call 395-2392.
Once you’ve selected the appropriate academic program, you need to start researching the many organizations and internship opportunities. JobShop (www.brockport.edu/career) lists many internships in the Rochester area and elsewhere. While JobShop is a great place to start, it is just a starting point. You can also use your personal network, faculty members or even make cold calls to find an internship.
After you have identified possible internships, the excitement really begins with the initial phone calls, polishing or writing your resume and going on interviews. Remember, finding an internship is really no different than finding a job. The skills you use in developing an internship are the same skills you will use after graduation. Then, once you’ve landed the internship, make sure to fill out all required paperwork to ensure you receive academic credit.
