WHAT IS A PERSONAL STATEMENT?
A personal statement is often part of the graduate school application. It can be a written response to very specific questions or an essay written on a specific topic. The length will depend upon the school but will usually be between 1-3 pages in length. You may want to brainstorm some answers to the following questions:
- What work experiences have led me to want a graduate degree?
- What life experiences have led me to this career field?
- How have you prepared yourself to succeed in graduate school?
- What personal attributes make you likely to succeed in graduate school?
Ingredients for a strong essay (personal statement):
- Interesting opening statement
- A glimpse of your personality
- Understanding the challenges in graduate school
- Why you will be a successful alumni of the program
- What appeals to you about the school, program, field of study, etc.
It is important that your essay or personal statement be grammatically correct and neatly written. The admissions committee is looking for what you can bring to their university and program. Career Services has several books that can assist you in writing your personal statement and the professional staff is available to edit your essay.
