JOB SEARCH

Most of us have looked for a job at one time or another. The same strategies that you used to find your first part time job are the same strategies that you can use in your professional job search.

There are two kinds of jobs to pursue: advertised and unadvertised.  Before you begin to look at where you can find out about these jobs, make sure you are ready to begin your job search by answering the following questions:

1.Do I have an idea of what type of position I am looking for?

2.Is my resume and job search correspondence ready?

3.Do I have geographic limitations?

4.Would I like to work in a large corporate environment, small business, a not-for profit agency, or another venue?

Once you have the responses to the above questions, it will make your job search much easier.  So where to start..

Register on JobShop- The College at Brockport's web based job listing service that is powered by the National Association of Colleges and Employers and gives you access to national listings as well as local listings.

Visit the Career Services web page.  What companies are coming to the job fairs and participating in the on-campus interview program?  These are companies with real job openings.

Look at the local want ads (often on-line), or other on-line job banks to get a sense of what is available.  The competition will be very stiff for these jobs.  If you are looking to relocate, look at the newspaper for that geographic area (available at Wegman's), and check the Web for college career services offices in that area. .

Read the business section of the newspaper, take note of what companies are announcing new hires, expansions, mergers, etc.  These are businesses you may want to contact.

Find out what professional associations are in your field and if they offer student memberships.  Most professional organizations have a Web page that lists job opportunities in their field.

Temporary agencies give you an opportunity to earn some money and try out some different organizations.   (JobShop's NACELink database advanced search will show listings from temporary agencies and staffing firms.)

Now to find those hidden or unadvertised jobs, you must develop a network.  Your network consists of relatives, friends of relatives, your friends and friends of your friends as well as people in your church, neighbors, former supervisors, people you met while doing your internship and professional acquaintances.

  • Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job.  While they may not have a job for you, they may be able to refer you to influential people who can inform you about career opportunities.

  • Have business cards printed with your contact information and your objective. It is much easier to always have these handy than a resume.
  • Take advantage of your alumni network.

AND FINALLY,
don't get discouraged!  Looking for a job is a job.   Get organized and get started!
