Coaching Athletics Minor

Description

The regulations of the Commissioner of Education of the New York State Department of Education require persons who coach an interscholastic athletic team to complete an approved program for coaches prior to or within the first three years of their employment. (Valid First Aid, CPR and child abuse certificates are required for initial employment.)

Brockport's coaching minor, designed for students who are not in the physical education teacher certification program, fulfills this requirement and also provides greater depth in preparation for prospective coaches in schools, sports clubs, community programs, colleges, or other athletic organizations.

Admission to the Program

Any undergraduate student outside the physical education teacher education major can declare this minor.

Program Requirements

The minor consists of 18 credits:

  • PEP351 Coaching Sports
  • PEP350 Scientific Foundations of Coaching
  • PEP3XX Coaching Clinics (3 required)
  • PEP3XX Advanced Performance
  • PEP354 Coaching Practicum

Additional Requirements for New York State Coaching Certification

The minor is designed to meet the academic requirements for coaching certification in the State of New York. Students who wish to seek state certification must meet all the requirements of the State of New York in force at the time of their application for certification.

At the time of publication, these additional requirements are:

  • a state-approved child abuse class/workshop
  • SAVE (Schools Against Violence Education) training
  • Heads Up, Concussion in Youth Sports
  • DASA (Diginity for All Students Act) training
  • a state-approved and current First Aid (including AED training) and CPR certification

Students should consult the Coaching Coortinator in the Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education for the list of current requirements.
