English Minor

Description

The minor in English allows students majoring in other disciplines to construct a program of study in English that will be appropriate to their individual interests and prospective careers. Students may wish to develop their individualized English minor around concentrations in such areas as American literature, British literature,women writers, cultural studies in literature, writing, and modern literature. It is also acceptable to simply choose five electives of interest.

Admission to the Program

Any undergraduate student can declare this minor.

Program Requirements

The program requires 18 credits, at least 9 credits taken at Brockport, and at least 9 credits taken in courses numbered 300-499.

A grade of "C" or higher is required for ENG 303.

  • ENG 303 Introduction to Literary Analysis
  • five elective courses chosen by advisement

Student Learning Outcomes

The following Learning Outcomes are the central objectives for teaching and learning in the Department of English. Upon completing the minor, students should be able to:

  1. Analyze the relationship between literary form and meaning, taking into consideration literary techniques and devices.
  2. Construct arguments about literary works using historical contexts.
  3. Identify reputable and relevant sources, and incorporate the words and ideas of others without misrepresentation and with appropriate documentation practices.
  4. Write in conformity with standard usage and grammar.
