All minor programs include CHM205 and CHM206. The minor is completed with a minimum of ten additional semester hours of chemistry courses chosen from the upper level listing. Each elective course applied to fulfillment of the ten-credit minimum must have CHM206 as a prerequisite, directly or indirectly. Contemporary issues courses have no prerequisite other than ENG112 and may not be used as part of a minor in chemistry.
Two minor programs are possible. The first includes organic chemistry in the second year. A minimum of two elective credits is taken in the second or third year to complete the minor program. The organic chemistry option is of most value to biology majors. It is also an appropriate minor for pre-medical or pre-dental students. Students who plan to pursue graduate studies in cellular or molecular aspects of biology are strongly advised to take CHM303 as an elective course, and to strengthen their minor program with additional chemistry electives.
The second option includes two semesters of physical chemistry. This option requires five courses outside of the chemistry department: MTH201, MTH202, MTH203, PHS235 and PSH240. These five courses are prerequisites to physical chemistry and must be completed prior to enrollment in CHM405. This minor is of particular value to physics, math and geology majors who plan to pursue graduate studies in their major area or in applied mathematics.
Outlines of the two minor programs follow. Elective options to complete or to supplement the minor program are listed as normal fall term or spring term offerings.
