SUNY Brockport Lands $60K Merck /AAAS Grant
BROCKPORT, NY – SUNY College at Brockport has received a $60,000 research grant to promote and support collaborative, interdisciplinary undergraduate biology/chemistry research.
The three-year Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program grant, sponsored by the Merck Company Foundation and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), will provide $20,000 per year for joint use by the biology and chemistry departments at SUNY Brockport.
During each of the three years, the grant provides resources for four summer research fellowships for SUNY Brockport undergraduates to participate in research projects that are at the interface of chemistry and biology. Four $3,200 stipends are currently available for participation in eight-week summer research experiences. It will also be used to support additional interdisciplinary activities that bridge chemistry and biology, including seminars with invited speakers.
The grant application was prepared by Maggie Logan PhD, Mark Heitz PhD and Markus Hoffmann PhD from the Department of Chemistry; and Tracey Householder PhD, Adam Rich PhD and Rey Sia PhD from the Department of Biological Sciences, and the research will be performed in their laboratories.
The Merck/AAAS competitive grant program was launched in 2000 and grants will continue to be made through 2009. The program has as its goals to: enhance undergraduate education through research experiences that emphasize the interrelationship between chemistry and biology; to encourage students to pursue graduate education in chemistry and the life sciences; and to foster undergraduate programs and activities that bridge chemistry and biology.
