Sea Spray from a Molecular Point of View
Abstract: We use probe molecule spectroscopy to characterize aerosol particles that mimic sea spray. In particular, we try to understand how the surface morphology of sea spray particles changes as the relative humidity changes. Our results illustrate that over a wide range of composition, these particles have core-shell structure with NaCl in the core and primarily hydrated magnesium salts in the shell. We also investigate the “aging” process of marine aerosols by examining the effect of adding nitrate on the particle morphology and phase change behavior.
