Students may choose to major in communication studies, or journalism and broadcasting. Majors are advised by specialists in each program area. The major in communication studies emphasizes theory and applied skills development including speaking, listening, writing, and critical analysis. Course topics range from interpersonal, small group, organizational, public, and mediated communication.
Students in journalism and broadcasting pursue a broad range of production and writing courses in electronic media including print, internet, radio and television. Students select one of the following specialty areas: Media Production, Electronic/Print Journalism, Public Relations or Media Studies.
All Communication Department majors are required to complete a minor or second major in a discipline outside the department.
