Department of Communication

Communication Studies Track

BA or BS in Communication
Minor in Communication

The Communication Studies major explores human communication in a variety of contexts, including interpersonal, public, mediated, and cross-cultural settings, and examines the social influence of language and media. Students investigate a variety of communication practices with learning experiences in theory, history, criticism, application and performance.

Major in Communication Studies Degree Requirements: Students must complete 36-credit hours in the major, with at least 21-credit hours in upper-division courses (300-499). The Communication Studies major includes a required 9 credit hour Communication Studies Performance Core, and either a 27-credit hour Public and Mediated Communication Core or a 27-credit hour Interpersonal and Organizational Communication Core. At least 15 of the required 36 hours in Communication Studies courses must be taken at The College at Brockport. All students pursuing the major in Communication Studies must also complete a minor or a second major in a discipline outside the Communication Department.

Communication Internships: CMC 475 Communication Internship is offered every semester as well as during the summer and winter special sessions. Students must have completed a minimum of 54 credits hours (12 of them in Communication at The College at Brockport) and have a 3.0 GPA in the major, a 2.5 GPA overall. Students must apply to the internship coordinator at least 1/2 semester prior to the start of the anticipated internship.  Students seeking placement outside of the greater Rochester area are strongly encouraged to apply at least 6 months in advance of the start of their anticipated internship. CMC 475 will count as an upper division course towards the 48 upper division credits required of all undergraduates.  It will NOT count as an elective in the major.  However, students must take the internship for a letter grade, thus it will count towards a student's major GPA. For application procedure, consult the department Web site.

Academic Planning: Use this checklist for tracking completion of your major or minor degree requirements. Courses are worth 3 credits unless indicated otherwise. Although the Department of Communication strives to maintain regular rotation of courses, the schedule is subject to change. In addition, ‘special topics’ elective courses may be occasionally offered as well as study abroad options. To take full advantage of the learning opportunities available to you, make an appointment to meet with your assigned advisor every semester.
