Korni S. Kumar
Dr. Korni Swaroop Kumar is Chairperson in the Department of Criminal Justice, The College at Brockport (SUNY). He holds a M.S.W./M.A. degrees and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. His research focus is in the areas of homicide, media presentation of homicide, correction, deviance, and higher education. He has been a participant in professional conferences at the regional/state-wide, national (ASA, ASC, and ACJS) and international (Tokyo, Austria, Hungary, India) level. Professional recognition: Awarded the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action Leave for Fall – 98; Recipient of “President’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors – 1998.” Recipient of two Chancellor’s Awards: “Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching – 2002,” “Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service – 2004.” Professional participation includes two National Endowments for Humanities Summer Seminars. Recipient of several college level research grants between 1994-2003. Currently involved in four areas of research: (1) International Police Cooperation – Asian/Global Perspectives; and (2) Social (Dis)Order, Social Control, and Collective Regulation: Changing Topography in the 21st Century; (3) Incivility to Violence; and (4) Corruption: Legal, Ethical Issues in India. He continues to serve in the following professional capacities: President of New York State Sociological Association, 1999-2000; Treasurer (2003- ) and Archivist (2003-) – New York State Sociological Association; and Vice President Region V, Criminal Justice Educators Association of New York State. He is an active member of NYSSA since 1993, at which time he joined the Sociology Department, SUNY College at Potsdam. Due to his commitment to the organization, he was elected President of the NYSSA 1999-2000. His continuing enthusiasm and leadership skills for the organization have been recognized by NYSSA and two more appointments were made: Treasurer (responsibility he shares with Prof. Tim Delaney, Sociology Department, SUNY College at Oswego),and Archivist. He has a special interest in community involvement in social institutions, the integration of community interest in educational and social activities, and the development of creative funding of related activities. In addition, he is active in recruiting and maintaining the involvement of minority populations in activities which enrich the functioning of such populations.
