Audition Information

Applicants must submit a complete college application to Graduate Admissions by April 13th. It can be submitted on-line or in person while on campus for the audition. The audition process runs over the course of two days and includes:

  • time to visit ongoing classes and meet faculty and current graduate students;
  • an interview/discussion of your educational and professional goals;
  • participation in modern dance based technique class;
  • a presentation of a three to five minute piece of solo choreography created and danced by you (sound system and theater space provided);
  • a writing assessment, essay style (subject and materials provided);
  • an opportunity to observe/participate in graduate seminars and ballet;
  • an opportunity to see student, faculty and/or guest artist concert work (evenings); and
  • an opportunity to teach a beginning dance class to non-majors for those applicants approved for consideration for teaching assistantships. There are a limited number of highly competitive graduate assistantships available; as such, an applicant’s resume should demonstrate considerable experience teaching college-age students. Please bring a typed lesson plan with you to illuminate your teaching process and be prepared to share your teaching philosophy with the faculty. Arrangements need to be made well in advance for a teaching audition.

It is preferred that all auditions be done in person on the above dates. If you are unable to attend an audition in person, please call the Department of Dance to discuss possible alternatives. With prior permission, videotapes/ DVDs may be accepted and must include:

  • an oral self-introduction including your name, what dance program you are interested in, the reasons for your interest in The College at Brockport and a synopsis of your career goals;
  • a three-five minute modern dance technique self choreographed solo; and
  • any additional performance or studio work (optional)

Graduate Applications

Graduate applications are now self-managed. Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions by April 13 for fall admission. Dance auditions are held in March.

The graduate assistantship and audition applications should be returned to the Department of Dance.
