ARTS FOR CHILDREN INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR: DANCE SPECIALTY
TOTAL REQUIREMENTS: 48 CREDITS Arts for Children majors are committed to teaching, scholarship, creative expression and service related to the education of children in and through the arts. The interdisciplinary approach helps students leverage new understandings that couldn’t be obtained through singular discipline studies alone. Specific knowledge and skills are learned in each arts area: visual art, dance, music and theatre. Students pursue additional study in an arts discipline of their choice, which may include dance. Interested students must audition and be accepted into the dance specialty area. Please follow the guidelines provided by the Department of Dance. The Arts for Children major is unique in the nation – it requires 48 credit hours of study leading to a BA or BS degree. Students may choose to double major in dance. The major fills another need in providing substantive arts training to prospective classroom teachers. Many Arts for Children majors take part in one of the classroom teacher certification programs. The major is NCATE accredited and approved by the New York State Education Department, and it satisfies pre-professional requirements leading to certification in Early Childhood (birth – grade 2) or Childhood Education (grades 1 - 6).
