Undergraduate Programs in Dance
The BA/BS in Dance requires 35 credits in selected
dance courses with a possible additional 19 elective dance credits. In contrast, the BFA in Dance requires
85 credits in dance and emphasizes preparation for performance and performance-related
careers. The BFA is also appropriate for students pursuing Pre
K-12 State Teacher Certification in Dance with the MA degree.
Dance students receive daily training in modern dance and ballet technique,
including conditioning and somatics work. Supporting techniques offered
include jazz, tap, Afro-Brazilian, African, and Irish dance. Dance
majors also study improvisation, music for dance, composition, anatomy
and physiology, kinesiology, injury prevention, Laban based theory, dance
history, and production. Courses in dance repertory,
aesthetics and criticism, body therapies, children's dance, and teaching
methods round out the dance major.
Dance is offered as a speciality option in the
Arts for Children major.
Also, SUNY Brockport students can combine a BA/BS dance major curriculum
with existing programs that prepare them for graduate study in dance therapy,
arts management, dance medicine, and other careers.
