Why Earn a Degree in Dance?
Most dance studios and professional dance schools provide preparation
in the area of dance performance only. Dance training at the college
level is broader in scope. Always inquire about the curriculum provided,
both in required course work and in electives. A masters degree
and/or certificate may be required or desirable for some dance careers.
If you plan to spend your life as a dance professional, consider preparing
yourself in more than one area of specialization.
While up to 54 dance credits may be applied toward the 120 required for degree completion, only 35 dance credits are required. The course sequence is designed to give students depth and breadth within dance studies while allowing credits and time to complete a second major and/or minor. A second major is suggested as supporting preparation for many career and graduate study goals. For example:

along with the study of alternative training, injury prevention,
dance science, somatics, music, history, composition, performance techniques,
and dance repertory. Simultaneously, students have many opportunities
to perform their own work and that of guest artist and faculty choreographers.
This performance-centered degree requires frequent evening and weekend
rehearsals and aims to develop discipline, commitment and artistry
needed in the professional world and in MFA programs.
This 48-credit major combines the arts with teaching children in a program that prepares students for creative, innovative and stimulating careers. Focusing on aesthetic perception, creative expression, and arts in education it is excellent for students who wish to work with children through the arts in educational, recreational and therapeutic settings.. Students select the art, dance, music or theatre form in which they have a particular interest and ability for their area of specialization. Those who wish to pursue teaching careers, may combine Arts for Children with an Early Childhood or Childhood teacher certification program.
A dance minor consists of 18 credits, including two semesters of modern dance technique. The dance minor advisor assists students in selection of courses that compliment their academic majors.
The dance audition, offered three times annually (November, February and March), is required for admission to all four programs.
