Diversity Committee Charge
I. Policy & Commitment
The State University of New York College at Brockport has committed itself to a proactive policy of non-discrimination in regard to race, color, creed, sex, national origin, religion, marital status, disability, veteran status, and sexual orientation. Moreover, it is committed to recruiting and supporting students, faculty and staff to ensure that we mirror, to the extent possible, the diversity that is evident in a global society and that equity prevails for all members of the College community.
The ultimate authority and responsibility for demonstrating and leading the College's commitment to equal opportunity, affirmative action, and diversity is the President's. Diversity is everyone's business at the College – not a select few. The responsibility for the oversight of diversity and equity at the College has been delegated to the Affirmative Action Office with support from a Diversity Committee appointed by the President.
Further, the President has stated as one of the College's major goals an institution-wide commitment to embracing diversity and achieving a more inclusive community.
II. Affirmative Action Officer
The Affirmative Action Officer is responsible for:
- Communicating the College's commitment to diversity and equity to the College community;
- Developing and monitoring the College's diversity plan;
- Investigating and resolving grievances or complaints relating to discrimination, diversity, harassment, equitable treatment, or other human interactions,
- Reviewing student and staff recruitment plans to ensure that they are in compliance with the College's commitment to diversity, and
- Preparing and analyzing reports to monitor our success.
It is the duty of the Affirmative Action Officer to ensure that our diversity-equity policy is carried out. It is also the duty of the Affirmative Action Officer to ensure the College is in compliance at all times with equal opportunity and affirmative action laws, rules, and regulations. The Affirmative Action Officer reports to the President.
III. Diversity Committee
To provide the Affirmative Action Officer with a representative advisory board, the President has appointed a Diversity Committee.
The general responsibility of this committee is to advise the President and the Affirmative Action Officer on issues relating to diversity for faculty, staff, and students.
Specifically, the Diversity Committee's role shall be to:
- Assist with the development of a Strategic Plan for Diversity.
- Serve on ad hoc committees as needed to assist with implementation of the Strategic Plan for Diversity.
- Monitor progress towards implementation of Strategic Plan for Diversity.
- Provide oversight and planning for the Diversity Conference each spring assuring systematic planning and use of base funding as provided in 2005.
- Provide recommendation on diversity issues to President's Cabinet.
- Design and attend diversity training utilizing consultants as needed.
- Be diversity advocates in their respective units by promoting awareness of policies and support training (workshops, lectures, and seminars) on topics relating to diversity for example, sexual harassment, sexual orientation, and disabilities.
IV. Leadership
The Affirmative Action Officer and Assistant to the President shall serve as co-chairs. The co-chairs shall:
- Be the executive heads of the committee;
- Preside at all committee meetings;
- Oversee the implementation of the policies of the committee;
- Appoint ad hoc committees as needed;
- Represent the committee as needed and fulfill such other duties as may from time to time be authorized by the committee; and,
- Prepare an annual report, in writing, for the President at the end of each academic year.
V. Membership and Terms of Service
The Diversity Committee will have approximately 14-16 members including co-chairs as noted below. Following consultation with the Affirmative Action Officer, the President shall appoint the members for two-year terms. Membership will include:
- 1 Affirmative Action Officer (co-chair)
- 1 Assistant to the President (co-chair)
- 4-6 Faculty members:
- 1-2 School of Arts and Performances
- 1-2 School of Letters and Sciences
- 1 School of Professions
- 1 College Senate President, Past-president or President-elect
- 4 Designees from each Division
- 1 Academic Affairs
- 1 Administration and Finance
- 1 Enrollment Management and Student Affairs
- 1 Advancement
- 1 Admissions Office employee
- 1 REOC employee
- 1 Graduate student
- 1 Undergraduate student
VI. Meetings
The committee shall meet at least three times each semester, optimally in the following months – September, October, November in the fall and February, March and April in the spring.
