Department of Educational Administration
NCATE: The standard of Excellence in Teacher Preparation.

The Department of Educational Administration, as a member of the Professional Education Unit at SUNY Brockport, has received accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for its teacher education programs.

The Department of Educational Administration was founded in 1966 with the hiring of Dr. Lionel “Hap” Metivier as the first chairperson. Other early members of the department included Dr. Ronald Davis, Dr. Herman Kirkpatrick, Dr. George Rentsch, and Dr. William Rock, just to name a few. Since that time, many changes have taken place in the program, from the composition of the faculty to the demographics of the students the department serves.

Thousands of students have graduated the program, with many of them going on to serve in administrative positions throughout the state and even the country. Quite a few program graduates return to the department as adjunct faculty, bringing with them their knowledge and expertise as a field practitioner.

Dr. Sandra Graczyk, current Chair of the department, continues to build the program's reputation as a recognized leader in the area of training school administrators. As a result of her effective leadership and vision, the department continues to enjoy an enviable reputation for quality. Through a time of losing many of the full-time faculty through retirement incentives, she has worked diligently to keep the program viable and healthy by recruiting new faculty who share the same vision and commitment. The department also has a strong and highly regarded team of adjunct faculty, the majority of whom are currently practicing administrators, who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise into the classroom.

The Department’s mission is a commitment to preparing educators who can effectively fulfill a variety of leadership roles in education. The Department has and continues to recruit and serve women and minority group persons. This endeavor has been very successful and has contributed to increasing the number of female and minority administrators in public schools throughout the state.
