CAS in Educational Administration

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration is a 60 credit-hour graduate degree program. Matriculated students receive 24 hours of transfer credit for the earned master's, leaving 36 credit hours of work to complete the degree. The program of study is listed below.

EDA 830 Program Management and Instructional Leadership (3 cr.)
EDA 871 Legal Basis of Education (3 cr.)
EDA 885 Practicum in Educational Leadership (3 cr.)
EDA 888 Administrative Internship (6 cr.)
EDA 896 Central Office Administration (6 cr.)

Upon completion of the 36 hours listed above, students are awarded the CAS degree, which is the post-masters/pre-doctorate degree. In addition, they are eligible to apply for both the School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) administrative certifications issued by the New York State Education Department.

The majority of the teaching takes place at SUNY Metro Center (55 St. Paul Street) in downtown Rochester. EDA 600 Foundations of Educational Leadership (which is the prerequisite course in the program) is taught on Friday from 4:30-8 pm and Saturday from 9 am-4:30 pm for 7 weekends. Other courses in the program are taught on Saturday from 9 am-4:30 pm for 5 Saturdays or on a weeknight from 5-9 pm for 10 weeks. EDA 885 Practicum in Educational Leadership is taught on the SUNY Brockport campus.

Admissions requirements are as follows:

1. An earned master's degree;
2. A letter on school district stationery from a principal (assistant principal or vice principal is not acceptable), an assistant superintendent, or a superintendent confirming that:

the student has completed at least one (1) year of satisfactory teaching or certificated pupil personnel services experience. This is defined as a full-time probationary position or long-term subbing; per diem subbing does not qualify;
the student is an outstanding teacher or pupil personnel services worker;
the student has excellent oral and written communication skills;
the student has leadership potential;
the district will provide the student with opportunities for increased responsibilities in leadership roles (e.g., chairing a committee, planning activities or events, making formal oral presentations).

3. A letter on school district stationery from a building principal (assistant principal or vice principal is not acceptable), an assistant superintendent, or a superintendent stating that he/she agrees to act as your mentor (can be same administrator as above and can be contained in above letter or can be a different administrator and a separate letter).

In addition, the prerequisite course--EDA 600 Foundations of Educational Leadership--requires two years of full-time teaching or pupil personnel services experience as defined above.

The Department also has a formal articulation agreement with the Margaret Warner Graduate School at the University of Rochester to help CAS graduates enter and complete an EdD in educational administration from the University of Rochester (U of R).

The U of R offers, on a competitive basis, two scholarships per year to students who graduate from SUNY Brockport with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration or a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Business Administration. To qualify for consideration, a student must be recommended by the Department of Educational Administration at SUNY Brockport, be accepted into the U of R's EdD program, and be chosen by the U of R's scholarship selection committee. The scholarship provides for:

Reduction of the U of R tuition by one-third for the duration of the student's continued enrollment leading to the doctorate
Acceptance of up to 45 hours of graduate transfer credit for work completed in the SUNY Brockport Department of Educational Administration, depending on the relevance of the prior study.
