Department of Educational Administration

Open Enrollment vs. Cycles

There are two formats in which the department offers courses: open enrollment and cycle.

Open enrollment course offerings are taught at the SUNY MetroCenter in downtown Rochester. All required EDA courses are offered each semester (spring, summer, fall). Students taking courses on an open enrollment basis are able to pick and choose which course(s) they will take in any given semester. EDA 600 Foundations of Educational Leadership (the prerequisite course in the program) is taught on Friday, 4:30-8 pm, and Saturday, 9 am-4:30 pm, for 7 weekends scheduled throughout the semester or summer session. The other required EDA courses (EDA 653 Site Management, EDA 678 Models of Effective Supervision, EDA 694 Resource Management, EDA 830 Program Management and Instructional Leadership, and EDA 871 Legal Basis of Education) are offered either on Saturday, 9 am-4:30 pm for 5 Saturdays or on a weekday evening, 5-9 pm, for 10 evenings scheduled throughout the semester or summer session.   There are three required field experiences in the program: EDA 885 Practicum in Educational Leadership is offered every semester and is taught on the SUNY Brockport campus; EDA 888 Administrative Internship is offered every semester and the seminars are held at the SUNY MetroCenter; EDA 896 Central Office Administration consists of regular classroom instruction for 5 Saturdays, 9 am-4:30 pm, at the SUNY MetroCenter, field-based experience in a central office setting, and is offered every semester.

Cycles of the CAS Program are occasionally offered at off-campus locations. The majority of the cycle offerings are set up in collaboration with the administrative leadership of the BOCES representing the geographic region. For example, the department currently has two cycles running in collaboration with the GST (Greater Southern Tier) BOCES in Coopers Plains, just outside of Corning, New York.  Students who did not enter the program as part of a cycle program are unable to join a cycle already in progress.   Individuals interested in the program who reside in the Greater Rochester area (Monroe, Ontario, Genesee, Wayne, Orleans, Livingston, Wyoming counties) will take their course work (with the exception of EDA 885 Practicum in Educational Leadership) at SUNY MetroCenter in downtown Rochester.

Six hours of Educational Administration (EDA) courses are offered each semester. Every cycle begins with EDA 600 Foundations of Educational Leadership, which is the prerequisite course in the program. EDA 600 is taught on Friday from 4:30-8 pm and Saturday from 9 am-4:30 pm for 7 weekends scheduled throughout the semester. Each semester thereafter, two 3-credit-hour courses are offered on 5 Saturdays from 9 am-4:30 pm, for a total of 10 Saturdays scheduled throughout the semester.
