Thomas J. Hernández, Ed.D., LMHC

 Dr. Thomas Hernández has served as a counselor, administrator, advisor, career counselor, and professor in colleges in Western New York for more than ten years. He received his BA from the University of Rochester in Philosophy and Psychology and subsequently completed his MS and EdD at the same institution. Dr. Hernández's doctoral dissertation, entitled The Concept of Career of Latinas in the Higher Education Machine, had him focusing his efforts on an understanding of the conceptualization of "career" in Puerto-Rican American women in colleges and the ultimate effect of this notion on the career development process. He is Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

Professionally he is a member of the American Counseling Association, the National Career Development Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, and the New York State Counseling Association. He has also been an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Excellence and Equality in Education. Dr. Hernandez is past-president of the New York Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Currently, Dr. Hernandez serves as a board member for the New York State School Counselors Association and is the conference coordinator for the Western New York School Counselors Consortium.

Dr. Hernández's current research continues in all areas of difference in the counseling process. Particularly of interest are issues of gender, culture and disability in the social context in which we live. This includes a serious interest in the use of these conceptual notions in our society, and thus in our practice as counselors, and counselor educators. In addition, Dr. Hernandez 's research focuses on issues of technology in counseling and the impact of technology on children in schools. Hernández has taught courses such as Career Counseling, Career Development Concepts, Individual Counseling Concepts, the Organization and Administration of Higher Education, and Psychopathology.
