THE BESSIE WALKER BROWNE AWARD

The Bessie Walker Browne Award recognizes and encourages a promising SUNY Brockport elementary teacher candidate whose achievement in pre-certification reading courses indicates excellent potential for teaching reading in elementary grades. This award honors the
memory of Bessie Walker Browne, a dedicated teacher of children, a Brockport alumnus.

Eligibility:

  1. Must be enrolled in a teacher certification program in the Department of Education and Human Development.
  2. Must have completed at Brockport the courses Emergent Language and Literacy and Language, Literacy and the Learner or Supporting Young Children's Language and Literacy Learning.
  3. Must have demonstrated promise as an excellent classroom teacher of reading.

Criteria:

  1. Must have earned an outstanding record in Literacy I and Literacy II.
  2. Must be recommended for this award by two or more instructors of Reading in the Department of Education and Human Development.
