Adolescence Inclusive Generalist Education Grade 7-12
with Middle Childhood Extension (Grade 5-6)

Program Information

The Adolescence Inclusive Generalist Education Program offers initial dual certification in Adolescence with Middle Childhood Extension grade 5-12 in the following content areas: English, foreign language (French or Spanish), mathematics, science (Biology, Earth Science, Physics, and Chemistry), and social studies (History), and initial certification in Students with Disabilities Generalist grade 7-12. Teacher candidates with dual certification are qualified to teach in their content area of certification in grade 5-12 and in special education/inclusive classrooms in grade 7-12. A separate application is required to apply for admission to the Adolescence Inclusive Generalist Program. Application review dates are September 15 and February 15: applications are available online at www.brockport.edu/ehd.

  • Education is not a major at the college. Applicants attending Brockport must be enrolled in one of the nine content majors: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English (Literature Track), French, History, Mathematics, Physics, and Spanish.
  • Prospective transfer students are strongly encouraged to carefully review academic major requirements in the nine content majors before choosing an academic major at www.brockport.edu/academics. While most academic majors are 36 credit hours, some majors have additional credit hours and co-requisites as requirements. Transfer students can apply for program admission before college acceptance, but must be accepted by the College prior to enrollment in classes. Acceptance to the College does not guarantee acceptance to the program. In times of high demand not all applicants meeting minimum requirements may be accepted.
  • The optional General Science extension for science content majors in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics requires completion of 18 credits in at least two science areas other than the declared science major.
  • Applicants in the September review are encouraged complete to EDI 413 Introduction to Special Education or equivalent by end of the fall review semester.

Admissions Requirements at Time of Application

  1. Completion of a minimum of 45 hours of college-level course work.
  2. Completion (or in progress) of 15 credits counting toward the content major.
  3. Minimum cumulative >2.5 GPA both at Brockport and prior college(s) attended.
  4. Minimum cumulative >2.5 GPA in content major courses earned at Brockport.
  5. Three recommendations: two academic recommendations from recent college professors, at least one recommendation from a professor in the content major; and a professional recommendation from a volunteer or work experience.
  6. Submission of the application essay.

Note: While no longer an admission requirement, applicants are strongly encouraged to gain a volunteer or work experience with adolescents prior to program admission.
