REGULATOR and WHY/WHO NEEDS TRAINING

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

 

Right-to-Know or Hazard Communication Standard

OSHA/PESH* – required for all employees who handle or work with chemicals as part of their job; laboratories not included.

Initial training prior to working with chemicals and annual training thereafter. “Working with chemicals” defined as using chemical products not as a regular consumer – quantity and use.

Lab Safety

OSHA/PESH – required of all lab employees who use any type of chemical in a lab setting.

Initial training prior to working in a lab environment and periodically thereafter – every 2 to 3 years recommended.

Hazardous Waste Handling and Emergency Response

 

NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation and EPA require it for anyone who handles, stores or disposes of hazardous waste. All employees who are designated as emergency responders.

Required annually by NYSDEC and EPA – at the present time, SUNY Brockport is considered a large quantity generator under the NYS Environmental Regulations – NYCCR, Part 370. Emergency responders – 40 hr. initial training and 8 hr. refresher training, annually.

Bloodborne Pathogens

OSHA/PESH – required for any employee who has potential exposure to blood as part of their job.

Initial training and offer of the Hep B vaccine within 10 days - annual refresher training thereafter.

Respiratory Protection

OSHA/PESH – required for any employee who wears respiratory protection on the job.

Initial training, fit testing, and a physical with pulmonary function test required prior to use. Thereafter, annual training, fit check and/or a medical physical if physical/health changes.

Confined Spaces

OSHA/PESH – required for entrance into any confined spaces by employees or contractors.

Initial training prior to entrance into a confined space and yearly update/refresher training. Respirator program may apply.

Lockout/Tagout

OSHA/PESH – required of employees and contractors who work on energized equipment.

Initial training & periodic updates if conditions or methods change. Standard locks and tags required and info must be shared with contractors.

Forklift Safety

OSHA/PESH – required of any employee who operates a forklift.

Initial training and annual refresher thereafter. Requires “hands-on” training.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

OSHA/PESH – required of all employees who are exposed to hazards requiring PPE.

Assessment of work areas and training of employees to use PPE properly. Supervisors must require wearing of PPE if determined as necessary.

Hearing Conservation

OSHA/PESH – required for all employees who work in a high noise area(s) as determined by audiometric testing (>85 decibels).

Annual hearing test and refresher training for those employees working in a designated hearing conservation area.

Freon Use

EPA requires all those who handle freon to be a certified.

Initial and updated training as required by EPA. Records must be maintained on all freon use.

Asbestos Abatement

DOL, NYSDOH, EPA requirements for any employee who is involved in asbestos abatement, disposal, training.

Initial training, physical, x-ray, and pulmonary function test. Annually thereafter, except for the x-rays. Only certified asbestos personnel can remove asbestos. Awareness level training for those who come in contact with asbestos materials.
