Department of English
Exploring the Human Art of Language
English majors at Brockport engage with our active and distinguished faculty to study the rich traditions of British, American and World literatures, expository and creative writing, and film. The department brings these disciplines to life through practice and discussion, bolstered by real-world interaction with the accomplished writers of our day.
Our nationally acclaimed Writers Forum annually brings writers and literary personalities of the highest caliber to the campus to meet with students in both large and small settings. Among the more than 300 guest authors who have visited are Andrei Voznesensky, Archibald MacLeish, Malcolm Cowley, Nadine Gordimer, Sir Stephen Spender, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Derek Walcott and Seamus Heaney.
After graduation, success for English majors takes many forms. Our graduates go on to careers in a variety of fields—teaching, writing, publishing, law, and business are the most popular—or for further study in MFA or PhD programs.
As an English student, the skills that you develop in reading, writing, and critical thinking give you a wide range of career options. The diversity of ideas and the global literary traditions that you encounter —the “best that has been thought and said”—give depth and content to those skills. Best of all, as a student you have a variety of paths to choose from as you explore English — the human art of language.
