THE BLAINE DELANCEY MEMORIAL AWARD

2006 – 2007

1. Source

A fund has been established by friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Blaine DeLancey, Professor of English, 1934 – 1967, to establish a Memorial Award in perpetuity.

2. Eligibility and Topic

Any undergraduate or graduate major in the Department of English during the academic year of the award is eligible. The award will be given to the qualified person who submits the best critical essay (either original material or the result of research) or (1) a British or American author, (2) a literary genre, or (3) some combination of (1) and (2). Within these boundaries considerable scope and flexibility are intended, but the winning entry will display a sure grasp of the chosen topic, but also a grace and accuracy in the use of language and form.

3. Format

The essay will be presented in typewritten form, double spaced, and a copy will be retained by the author in the event of loss. Essays will be a minimum of 2500 words and a maximum of 5000 words in length.

Entries in this contest will not display on any page the author’s name or address. Rather, each author is to identify his or her entry only by means of a pseudonym. In a separate, sealed envelope attached to the essay, each candidate will identify his or her pseudonym, stating his name and address.

The MLA Handbook will be used as a guide for additional matters of form and documentation, as necessary, except that the candidate’s pseudonym will be used wherever the candidate’s legal name would otherwise appear.

4. The Award

In addition to the yet to be determined award for the best essay, the winner will receive a citation for excellence, and the essay will be published on campus in an appropriate form. The winner will be recognized at the Spring Honors Convocation.

5. Deadline

Essay entries are to be submitted to the Department of English, 211 Hartwell Hall, no later than February 9, 2006.
