Women’s History Month
The history of the world is rich with outstanding stories of the accomplishments of our people. However, for a long time more than half of the human race was not recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the betterment of our society. In the late 1970s, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration. This week soon began to be celebrated by schools all over the country and in 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to extend this week to an entire month. This began a nationwide annual celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of women and their history. Today, schools, churches, companies and community organizations throughout the country celebrate Women’s History Month to commemorate women and achieve equity goals in education as well as bring awareness and public consciousness about issues affecting women.
