EOP's 2005 Senior Scholar

We pleased to introduce Madeline Velazquez, the Educational Opportunity Program's 2005 Senior Scholar. Madeline has proven to be expedient, conscientious and thorough. She has shown herself also to be capable, engaging and extremely cooperative. Madeline comes to SUNY Brockport from MCC. She has stepped in and has been involved in a number of different campus activities and functions since arriving on the Brockport campus. For example, she participated in the 2004 Diversity Conference where she coordinated student presentations and craft activities. She is a student representative on the SUNY Brockport Diversity Committee. One project area in which Madeline is very excited to announce being part of is the Diversity 14420 Initiative. Madeline also helped create a program that bridged MCC and SUNY Brockport. This project is designed to increase our minority student enrollment. These are just some of the examples of how Madeline contributes her time and energy. By reading some of these examples one could see all the effort and time Madeline puts into her campus involvement. She has been a motivation to many, promoting them to get involved in campus activities. One of her assets is that she is an adult student. As an adult student she motivates fellow students with her energy and wisdom. Students see her drive and they seem to automatically want to jump right in, that's the kind of effect she has on other students and staff.

Despite all the time Madeline spends on campus involvement she still is able to put a great effort toward her studies here at SUNY Brockport as a social work major. Not only is Madeline involved around the SUNY Brockport campus; she is also able to compete in the classroom. She currently has a GPA of a 3.75. Madeline is an unselfish person when it comes to the classroom and learning. We say this because she also makes time to tutor other EOP students in social work. She could keep the knowledge she's learned to herself but she'd rather share it with others.

When she is not in the classroom or on campus she is in Rochester dancing or taking care of her family. Madeline also manages a dance troop in the Rochester area. On Wednesday nights she volunteers her service and teaches salsa and merengue here on campus for the SUNY Brockport community. It is clear that she is one of those one in a million students who has been gifted with an extraordinary amount of energy, creativity and determination but, most of all, caring for others.

Thank you Madeline, for coming into the EOP family and making a difference. You have made the EOP family proud. Keep up the good work and continue to strive toward your goals.
