AIDS AND HIV AMONG MINORITIES

By: Tiffany Collazo and Jilian Quigley

Since 1980s, the AIDS epidemic has risen in alarming numbers. Starting in San Francisco and New York City, HIV has spread widely around the U.S., especially amongst the minority community. By the end of December 2003, according to CDC statistics, an estimated 195,891 African Americans with AIDS have died. Between the years of 2000-2004, 556,442 African Americans and Hispanics combined were diagnosed with HIV. In 2004, the total number of AIDS cases diagnosed in black people overtook the number of AIDS cases diagnosed in white people.

Prevention methods include abstinence, using condoms correctly, and staying away from intravenous drugs. Getting tested for HIV is the most important method you can take to protect yourself and others. The College health center offers confidential HIV testing and counseling!! For more information visit the Health Center located in Hazen Hall, or go to avert.org for any questions.
