WHERE IS THE UNITY?

By: Kajana Malcolm, Jamila Crossdale and Latonia Phipps

Have you ever asked yourself why there are so few minorities on this campus, yet so much conflict among them? As freshmen, we have already experienced the lack of unity and respect for one another. Coming from big cities, we are used to large spaces and plenty of things to do, however, in this enclosed community there’s not much offered to us. The end result is that we find ourselves entertaining gossip about each other, fighting one another, and passing each other in the mall without so much as a glance of acknowledgement.

As minorities, we do not even support events put together by organizations such as OSAD, CSA and ALAS. When the student government and these organizations seek feedback from students about what they can offer, there is more complaining than talking. Students are not empowered to participate in their own learning and sense of unity.

We encourage students to become involved in what is happening on campus, whether through student organizations or other campus events. We need to understand that we are all in the same predicament. We have mutual feelings and wonderment about what is to come. We have to come together as one and get through our struggles together as ONE PEOPLE .

A simple hello or even a smile can go a long way.
