Employers Using Facebook and Other Social Web pages to Screen Candidates
Professionalism is paramount when it comes to looking for a new job. Posting personal information on Facebook, MySpace, Connect U, personal Web sites, e-mail and voicemail can affect whether or not you get that dream job. Future employers are using these methods of communications to screen potential candidates. For example, a growing number of employers are using their own password or somebody else’s to help them conduct background checks on candidates. Being a SUNY Brockport student, suppose you apply to company A and someone at company A knows a student or alumnus at SUNY Brockport and can access your Facebook profile. If your profile is not professional you may wonder or never know why you were passed over for employment. A recent study at Purdue University reported nearly 23 percent of the employers surveyed are reviewing candidate profiles on social networking sites. This same study concluded that 14.3 percent of employers review candidates personal Web sites and blogs.
It is also important to be professional with your instant messaging screen name or personal e-mail addresses (no crazyaboutyou or hottie for instance) if you’re using these when conducting a job search. If your e-mail address is unprofessional, get a new, free Web-based account. Also remember to record a professional voice mail message. Do not jeopardize your future employment by not being conscious of professionalism.
