Financial Aid Report

Everything You Wanted To Know About TAP And Then Some

The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a grant program funded by New York State. It helps eligible New Yorkers pay tuition at approved schools within NYS. The annual TAP award can be up to the maximum of $4,375 per academic year. Since TAP is a grant, it does not have to be paid back. As an EOP student you have ten F/T terms of TAP available to you. In order to qualify for TAP as a continuing student you have to:

  • Make sure you and applicable parents maintain your NYS residency status.
  • Complete a FAFSA renewal application.
  • Complete an annual TAP renewal application and continue to meet financial eligibility guidelines.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Maintain a C average after four terms of TAP awards.
  • Not be in default on any HESC guaranteed student loans.
  • Not used all ten F/T terms of eligibility.

There are several ways a continuing student can lose TAP. If you don’t meet the satisfactory credit-completion guidelines which can be found in “Your Right to Know” you will lose your TAP. You can also lose your TAP if after four semesters, your overall GPA falls below a 2.0. If you drop to part time status, it may seriously jeopardize your aid. Sometimes repeating a course that you completed successfully could also jeopardize your TAP.

If your TAP is eliminated you have several options. Depending on your personal situation you can file a TAP appeal. Please see your EOP counselor if you are contemplating this action. You can also file a financial aid appeal to cover the gap. Always remember to see your EOP counselor if you have questions.
